In my early twenties, I worked as an environmental research coordinator on marine biological expeditions to the islands and coral reefs of East Africa. Through a British organisation called The Society for Environmental Exploration, we received and trained volunteers to help conduct ecological surveys of the underwater world, coastal habitats and local fishing communities. Our reports for environmental organisations and national ministries went towards the creation and management of Mafia Island Marine Park in Tanzania and the Quirimbas National Park in Mozambique.
